Understanding vaping can sometimes seem a daunting prospect. For an outsider with little experience of the catagory, the product set can initially appear to be somewhat complex. Thankfully, once you get to grips with the terminology it is often the case that the products are relatively simple and transparent. Nothing embodies this better than the composition of an e-liquid.

In this post, we will explain in simple terms the ingredients which make up an e-liquid, and the quality standards Cuts Ice has in place for each ingredient to set our e-liquids apart.

The majority of e-liquids are made from four ingredients; propylene glycol, vegetable glycerine, nicotine, and flavourings.

Propylene glycol – Propylene glycol (PG) is a clear, syrupy liquid which is colourless and tasteless. PG is generally recognised as a safe additive and is widely used in food, pharmaceutical, and skincare products, amongst others.

In e-liquids, PG is generally used to effectively mimic the “throat hit” that smokers are used to from traditional cigarettes. Vapers can expect more flavour from liquids with a higher PG ratio in addition to the aforementioned “throat hit”. E-liquids with a higher PG ratio will usually be available in higher nicotine strengths and are ideal for use in mouth-to-lung (MTL) style devices.

Vegetable glycerine – Vegetable glycerine (VG) is a clear, odourless, and viscous liquid produced from plant oils. VG is non-toxic and regularly used as a solvent or sweetener in foods, a lubricant in pharmaceutical products, and as a preserving agent.

In e-liquids, VG is generally used to thicken e-liquids and produce a greater volume of vapour. Higher VG e-liquids will usually be available in lower nicotine strengths and used in “subohm” devices designed to produce bigger clouds of vapour.

Nicotine – Whilst not all e-liquids will contain nicotine, it is safe to say the vast majority do. Nicotine is extracted from the tobacco plant, and can be found in small amounts in other plants including tomatoes, potatoes, and aubergines.

There is a common misconception that nicotine itself is a dangerous or carcinogenic chemical due to its intrinsic link to smoking combustible tobacco. A recent survey by PHE found that nearly half of smokers incorrectly believe nicotine causes most of the tobacco smoking-related cancer, when evidence shows that nicotine carries about the same level of risk as caffeine.

Flavourings – Flavour is a key component in the vaping experience, and one of the main motivators for smokers to switch to the product. Cuts Ice has been at the forefront of the development of Vape Grade flavourings since our company’s foundation. We work closely with our suppliers to ensure that only the best flavour components, tailored for vaping, are put in our e-liquids. Our work on flavours continues in our on-site, exclusively designed laboratory.

We analyse each of our e-liquids at a molecular level, to ensure the best possible vaping experience for consumers, and crucially the safest. Using state-of-the-art technology, our scientists can analyse a unique flavour fingerprint which will immediately flag any molecules of concern – whether prohibited by current regulation or not. Cuts Ice is one of the few companies that can be sure of the science behind the flavourings in any of the e-liquids we produce for either our OEM clients or our own brands.

At Cuts Ice we only use pharmaceutical-grade PG, VG and nicotine in our premium e-liquids which we source from trusted suppliers.  Current vapers and smokers looking to switch can be sure that Cuts Ice e-liquids have been designed with care, and thoroughly tested to ensure a premium vaping experience.
